Gokyo Ri Trek via Gokyo Lakes begins from Lukla after taking an exciting mountain flight to Lukla. We will follow the classic Everest Base Camp Route from Lukla via beautiful Sherpa villages of Phakding, Monju and Namche Bazaar. From Namche we still follow the main trail till Sanasa and the trail to Gokyo Valley follows Dudh Koshi River to its source, Ngozumpa Glacier towards beautiful hamlet of Gokyo Valley. Ngojumpa is the longest glacier in Nepal Himalaya; you will have amazing view of it from Gokyo Ri also known as Gokyo trekking Peak.

Gokyo Ri is a trekking peak in the Khumbu region situated above Gokyo Valley on the west side of the Ngozumpa glacier. Normally it takes about 2 hours hike up from the Gokyo depending on your fitness and stamina you have. From Gokyo Ri, it is possible to see four 8,000-metre peaks: Mt. Everest (8848m), Makalu (8463m), Lhotse (8516m) and Cho Oyo (8201m) with many other small snow-capped peaks. We will have chance to see and enjoy Turquoise enticing blue high altitude lakes around Gokyo Valley in the area which are considered to be holy.

The Gokyo Ri trek, also known as Gokyo Valley Trek is a fairly popular trekking trail. The route itself ends at Gokyo Ri and Gokyo Lake fifth and trekkers typically turn around at this point and retrace their steps back to the trailhead. There are two alternative trekking routes that begins near the southern tip of Ngozumpa Glacier. This alternative route leads east over the Cho La, a pass at 5,420 m (17,782 ft) to meet with the main Everest Base Camp trek. Many people combined Gokyo Ri trek with Everest Base Camp

There are many optional excursions to extend the exploration and high-altitude walking, you could add the days by including the crossing of Renjo La Pass, a 5417m (17,782ft) high pass that goes to Thame Village and then Namche Bazaar and trekking through Chola Pass (5420m) on the east link you to Everest Base Camp Trek route.

Outline Itinerary
Day 01: Land in Kathmandu airport, meet and greet, transfer to hotel.
Day 02: Get permit, visit ancient old Hindu and Buddhist temples.
Day 03: Fly to Lukla (2800m) and trek to Phakding (2610m, 3-4 hours walk.
Day 04: Trek to Namche Bazaar (3440m), 5-6 hours walk.
Day 05: Rest and acclimatization day at Namche Bazaar. Explore surroundings.
Day 06: Trek to Mongla (3975m), 5 hours walk.
Day 07: Trek to Machhermo (4410m), 4- hours walk.
Day 08: Trek to Gokyo (4750m), 4-5 hours walk.
Day 09: Hike up Gokyo Peak (5357m), explore surrounding beauty and relax.
Day 10: Trek to Dole (4090m), 4-5 hours walk.
Day 11: Trek to Namche (3440m), 6 hours walk.
Day 12: Trek to Phakding (2610m), 4-5 hours walk.
Day 13: Trek to Lukla (2800m), 3-4 hours walk.
Day 14: Fly back to Kathmandu.
Day 15: Fly back to home or extend your trip

Note: Gokyo Ri trek can be custom-made as per your requirements. For your information Lukla flight is notorious for being delay problem  to and from Kathmandu by few hours or canceled for a day or more rarely, it may happen even in top trekking season also as you know how climate changes effecting our world. So, please allow a couple of spare night/s in Kathmandu following your trek if possible.  

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu
Flying to Kathmandu is thrilling with the views of snow-capped mountain peaks sprawling down below you are almost delighted, beginning a whole chain of memorable experiences that stay with you for a long, long time.I will meet you at the airport and escort you to your hotel. I will help you check into your designated hotel. At the hotel, you will be briefed about your daily activities.

Day 02: Sightseeing of Kathmandu Valley
Kathmandu is known as “the city of temples” and has been a popular destination for tourists ever since Nepal opened its doors to visitors. The city presents a wonderful mix of Hinduism, Tibetan Buddhism and Western influence in the Valley. Patan and Bhaktapur, its two major neighboring cities bear immense historical, cultural and religious significances. There will be a half day guided tour to the famous and biggest Hindu shrine of Pashupatinath,the largest Buddhist stupa in Nepal Boudhanath, the 15th century Palace of 55 windows and Swoyambhunath.

Day 03: Fly to Lukla/2800m and Trek to Phakding/2610m
Take exciting and adventurous flight of 35 minutes To Lukla from Kathmandu with beautiful views of landscape and snow capped mountains and start our trek to Phakding. It is pleasant walk of 3 hours today passing many Tibetan Buddhist prayer walls, monasteries and monuments. We have a tea or lunch trek on the way to Phakding. Stay overnight in lodge.

Day 04: Phakding - Namche Bazaar/3440m; 3 hours walk
After hot breakfast; we start our trek to Namche viaToktok, Benkar, Monjo and Jorsalle. After 3 hours hike passing many suspension bridges with good view of Mt. Thamserku and we should entry our Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and will have lunch in Jorsalle. Then we start to climb steep up slowly passing high suspension bridge till Namche Bazaar which takes about 2 and half hour. Stay overnight in lodge.

Day 05: Acclimatization day at Namche Bazaar.
As it is very important for the trekkers to schedule an ‘acclimatization day’ to acclimatize our body and to avoid AMS further up the trail. This never means we have to stop walking but it is always recommended to hike to higher elevation and sleep at lower so we can hike up to Everest view hotel for panoramic and spectacular view of mountains, walk to twin Sherpa village (Khumjung and Khunde) and vist Sherpa museum or hang around at Namche Bazar. There are many hotels, lodges, restaurants, bars, cyber café, boutiques, souvenir shops and groceries at Namche. This place is nice to hang around. Stay over in lodge.

Day 06: Namche – Mongla/3975m; 5 hours
In the morning, we start our trek like as before days and the trail continues to straight until reaching Kyanjuma and takes about 1 and half hour walk and then the trail climbs easy uphill to Mongla. We can see a series of picturesque mountains from there and very nice view of Tengboche is seen across the Dudhkoshi River.

Day 07: Tengboche - Machhermo/4410m; 5-6 hours walk.
The trail goes down to Phorste Tenga and continues uphill through the Rhododendrons, birch and blue pine forests until reaching the Dole then increasingly walk up through barren hillside. The trail is easy after Lhabarma via Luza to Machhermo. Stay overnight in lodge.

Day 08: Machhermo - Gokyo/4750m. 4-5 hours walk.
After hot breakfast continue our journey to Gokyo leaving the foothills entering desolate tundra, soon we will spot Gokyo first lake and Mt Cho Oyu, the path goes through Ngozumpa Glacier to beautiful high settlement of Gokyo Valley. Stay overnight in lodge.

Day 09: Hike up Gokyo Peak/5357m, explore and relax.
Hike up to Gokyo Peak or Gokyo Ri/5560m. About 2 hours climb up; for sun rise view and incredible mountain. The view is far better thanr Kala Pathar in your trekking. You have an excellent view of four of eight, eight-thousanders including Mt Everest/8848m, Mt. Lhotse/8510m, Mt. Makalu/8463, Cho Oyu/8153m, Pumori, Amadablam and other peaks. You have also unobstructed view of Sunrise from the top. Come back to hotel and stay there overnight.

Day 10: Gokyo - Dole/4090m. 4-5 hours walk.
Early morning hike up to Gokyo peak/5560m; 2/3 hours climb up; for sun rise view and incredible mountain views (best view of Mt. Everest in your trek). This is another super view after Kala Pathar in your trekking. You have an excellent view of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Makalu, Lhotse, Cho-Oyu, Pumori, Amadablam and other peaks. You have also unobstructed view of Sunrise Come back to hotel and after lunch trek to Dole. Stay overnight in lodge.

Day 11: Dole - Namche/3440m. 4-5 hours walk.
The trail descends till Phortse Thanga and it takes about 1 and half hour. Then the trail steep ascends until reaching Mongla; a place having beautiful view which takes about 1and half hour. Then continue your trek keep gently descending till Kyangjuma. After lunch there, continue until Namche Bazar. Stay overnight in lodge.

Day 12: Namche - Phakding/2610m. About 5 hours walk.
We leave the Namche Bazar and trail descents through pine trees and cross the high suspension bridge over the Dudh Kosi River. Then our trail continues River side and we arrive in Jorsalle and it takes about 2 and half hours. We continue again our trek until reaching Phakding with crossing several bridges about 1 and half hours walk. Stay overnight in lodge.

Day 13: Phakding - Lukla/2800m. About 3 hours walk.
We have a short and easy day today. It is an enjoyable walk most of the time until Ghat then short climb after Thadokoshi then the trail is pretty flat and 30 minutes climb up bring us to Lukla. Stay overnight in lodge.

Day 14: Fly back to Kathmandu.
Fly back to Kathmandu after breakfast your guide drops off you in your hotel and you can do last hour shopping for dear ones back home and chill out at Thamel. Stay in selected hotel.

Day 15: Fly back to home or extend your trip
After this beautiful trip fly back to home. Wilderness Excursion will drop you off to International airport for final departure.

Best Time to Trek

Autumn (September - November) and spring (March – April) are recommended as the best times for Gokyo Ri Trek. The weather is sunny and warm during the daytime with breath stopping views. If you would like to avoid crowds and enjoy less crowded time with nature then you could trek in winter (Dec - Feb) and it is still warm during the daytime and cold in the morning and nights. The temperature is -5 to -10 degree Celsius during the winter. However, the weather condition in Himalaya is associated with Indian Ocean. Trekking in the summer or Monsoon seasons (June to Aug) will be affected by rain but the summer trek could be a boon for a keen botanist. Meals

Difficulty

About difficulty of Gokyo Ri Trek, this trek is medium hard for the first time Nepal trekkers but if you have moderate fit body then this trek is not so hard for you. However, Wilderness Excursion advice you; to hike slowly and follow rest days on the way to get your body to get adapted with high altitude that allows you to become acclimatized and avoid AMS (Altitude Mountain Sickness)

Getting There

Most people fly to Luka from Kathmandu (The Price is U$ 160.00 for one flight per person). The flight is of about 30-35 minutes with the striking wide range of Himalaya view from the aircraft. Take the seat on the left side to see the mountain vista when boarding towards Lukla. If you can allow the time you could take local bus to Jiri or Shivalaya and it requires 6-7 days hike up and down get to Lukla. Alternatively, take local jeep to Salleri and commence the trek that takes around 4 days to reach Lukla;  that will make you physically much fitter and better acclimatized. Meals

During our Gokyo Ri Trek, you could enjoy wide-range of food verities, from western food to Authentic Nepal meal, Chinese and Tibetan etc. There are choices everywhere; Pasta, Pizza, Macaroni, Cheese, Eggs, Curry Rice, Chicken, Potato, Item, Spring Roll, and Chapati, Muesli, Porridge, Omelet, Pancakes for breakfast are few to name. At any guesthouse you could expect the choices to fall into one of these menu categories: Please do not expect the meal as world class standard but they always try to do their best to serve you in the high remote area.

Gokyo Valley Trek Cost

Gokyo Ri or Gokyo Valley Trek trip cost depends on the group size, season you are visiting. And the type of hotel includes in Kathmandu and the lodges we contain on the trail head also differ the price. The cost we have offer USD 1305.00 is standard trek price on double occupancy basis. Single supplement will cost extra USD 125.00. Accommodation in Kathmandu will be twin/double sharing deluxe bed room with continental breakfast in Samsara Resort. Accommodation on the way to trekking will be in good and clean mountain lodges on twin/double sharing basis. We can book deluxe lodges in Lukla, Namche Bazaar on request and that will cost extra.

Packing List and Equipment for Everest Gokyo Valley Trek

Footwear

  • A waterproof trekking boot with suitable ankle support that have been worn-in prior to the trek,
  • Trail shoes or trainer or casual shoes, for walking or strolling around (optional)
  • 2-3 Pairs of warm socks for colder areas depending on trekking duration and season you are trekking.
  • Gaiters, in case of rain or snow
  • Sandal or flip flop to take shower and walk around,
  • 2-3 pair of smooth thin wool, nylon or Capilene Liner socks to be worn next to the skin. This reduces the incidence of blisters and hot-spots and makes the outer sock last longer before needing to be changed. They should fit well with your heavyweight socks.

Leg wears

  • Trekking/hiking casual trousers and short, Thermal leggings for colder areas
  • Long skirt for women as an alternative to trousers and Waterproof trousers.

Body

  • Selection of hiking/trekking T-shirts, and long sleeved shirts, preferably not cotton
  • Thermal and warm shirts, possibly fleece shirt for colder areas.
  • Fleece jacket or warm wool jumper
  • Hard shell jacket with hood and hard shell pants if trekking in colder months/winter.
  • Windbreaker or waterproof jacket for higher altitudes
  • Down jacket (optional for cold nights and mornings; can be hired in Kathmandu cheaply)

Head/Hands

  • Wool or fleece hat, or balaclava
  • Hat or cap for sun protection while trekking
  • Sunglasses or goggles
  • Warm gloves
  • Buff and higher and colder place.
  • Large handkerchief/bandana for neck
  • Head lamp/torch with spare batteries

Personal Trekking Equipment

  • Strong rucksack or large hold all to be carried by porters
  • Day sack to carry valuables such as passport, cash, camera, travel documents personally
  • Plastic bags or stuff sacks to store/separate trekking gear inside your main bag, Personal first aid kit to include essential items, Adjustable 3 section trekking pole
  • 3-4 season sleeping bag, Camera and memory cards, charger, tripod if necessary, towel and toiletries., rain cover for yourself and luggage, multi-purpose hiking pocket knife.

Optional items

  • Binoculars, Books or an eBook, Altimeter, Compass and GPS.
  • Playing cards, backgammon and chess set etc.

For water

  • Two water bottles one liter each is fine or preferably camel bag water bottle. Water treatment tablets: Iodine, Dioxide tablets, Taste neutralizer tablets remove iodine taste if necessary. Vacuum flask and a cup preferably is doing teahouse.

Pee Bottle (Optional) but very useful.
Pee funnel for women (optional) Lightweight urinary director.
Hand/foot warmers (Optional) Recommended if you easily get cold hands and feet 1-3 pairs.

Personal first aid kit (small and simple) Aspirin, Moleskin, Adhesive tape, Band-Aids. Scissor, Blade,

Drugs/medications/prescriptions Climbers should bring Mupirocin (Bactroban) cream, excellent topical antibiotic for scrapes and cuts. Cirprofloxin (Cipro) 500mg tablets for travelers' diarrhea and for urinary tract infections. Loperamide (Lomotil) or Immodium for diarrhea. Acetazolamide (Diamox) 125 or 250mg tablets for alltitude sickness. Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) 200mg tablets for altitude headaches, sprains, aches, etc. Excedrin for headaches. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) 325mg tablets for stomach sensitivity.
