Everest Base Camp Trek by Road Trip Summary
You don’t have to fly into Lukla to reach Everest Base Camp. Instead, you can take a road journey from Kathmandu to towns such as Salleri or Thamdanda, and then begin your trek through the lower Khumbu region. This overland route offers a more immersive cultural experience, without worries about flight delays for days or cancellations, and the chance to enjoy unique perspectives of remote villages and diverse landscapes along the way.
Everest Base Camp Trek by Road is the best choice for those willing to trek to Everest Base Camp but want to avoid the adrenaline flight to Lukla. Some trekkers rated the Lukla flight as the craziest flight and loved it by adventurous junkies as a single-engine twin otter aircraft flies over the mountains and narrow gorges, deep valleys, and steep mountain walls that you think of as nerve-racking. Plus, the flights to Lukla from Kathmandu or Manthali are unpredictable and notorious for getting delayed by hours and days, even in peak season. Instead of this stressful trip, you can opt for the EBC trek without the Lukla flight, you can travel through the charming villages, valleys, and terraced farm lands, which is much safer, and that makes you fitter and well acclimatized is a bonus.
We (Wilderness Excursion) created a perfectly tailored itinerary and an unbeatable package trip cost that offers an excellent 14-day Everest Base Camp Trek by road transportation, which now goes to Sallerim Phaplu and even further to Tham Danda. Thamdanda, and further to Surkhe just below Lukla, is the last point accessed by a 4WD drive by a jeep.
Choosing land transportation for the trekking to Everest Base Camp not only ensures a safe and enjoyable journey but also makes the adventure more budget-friendly. Traveling overland from Kathmandu to Thamdanda allows you to experience diverse landscapes, traditional villages, vibrant cultures, and unique ways of life along the way. Unlike flying directly to Lukla, the road journey gives your body more time to gradually adapt, reducing the risk of altitude sickness. In addition to breathtaking views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Cho Oyu, and other majestic peaks of the Solukhumbu region, the land route adds an extra layer of beauty and authenticity to the modern Everest Base Camp Trek without the Lukla flight.
Many people choose the Everest Base Camp drive-in and fly-out option, as they consider the return flight from Lukla to be smoother than the flight in. You can also choose this option, or return from the Everest base camp trek by road travel again. We (Wilderness Excursion) are happy to customize your itinerary and logistic services. Tham Danda to Kathmandu drive can be too long (15 to 17 hours) which is why we split the first day in the itinerary to spend a night at Salleri or Phapu instead of driving 17 hours (345 km), and the road from Salleri to Tham Danda or Surkhe is just a newly opened track and suitable only for a 4WD drive and bumpy.
Why Choose the Road Route to Everest Base Camp Trek?
- Proper Acclimatization process: The trek from Salleri to Everest Base Camp provides a steadier trek that allows your body a proper acclimatization process, reducing the risk of altitude sickness.
- Scenic Drive from Kathmandu: The journey from Kathmandu to Salleri offers stunning views of the landscape, providing trekkers with a glimpse of rural Nepal.

The drive will be roughly 285 to 300 KM, via BP Highway. The drive from Kathmandu to Salleri is a long, takes 9 to 10 hours, rugged journey into the Solu region. The scenic route on winding mountain roads offers glimpses of rural life and the Himalayan foothills, serving as the starting point for treks to Everest Base Camp by drive.
After a hot breakfast at Saaleri, take a scenic 4WD journey from Saaleri to Tham Danda. This rugged, high-mountain drive reduces trekking time, offering breathtaking Himalayan views and a thrilling start to your Everest Base Camp trek adventure by road. The road is rough and seasonal. It is not accessible during the monsoon season or rainy months( June to early September)
The descent from Tham Danda to Surkhe and the hiking toward Phakding is a gentle whick provides also a scenic start. Winding through lush rhododendron forests and past traditional Sherpa villages via Chauri Kharka, Chhuplung and Ghat. The trail offers stunning mountain views and crosses several suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi River. It’s a relatively short and relaxing walk, perfect for acclimatization process as well.
After having a nicely prepared breakfast at Phakding, we leave from Namche Bazaar - the main gateway to all the Everest trekking. The trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar is the first major challenge on the Everest Base Camp trail. The path weaves through pine forests, crossing the roaring Dudh Koshi River multiple times via thrilling suspension bridges adorned with prayer flags. The final steep, rocky climb is demanding but is rewarded with breathtaking, first-ever views of Everest, Lhotse, and Kusum Kanguru. Arriving in the vibrant Sherpa capital of Namche, a bustling gateway nestled in an amphitheater of mountains, is an incredibly motivating and unforgettable achievement for every trekker trekking to Everest Base Camp and other treks around.
In our Everest Base Camp Trek itinerary, it is scheduled as an acclimatization day today to help your body adjust to the altitude and reduce the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) as you ascend. This doesn’t mean complete rest — in fact, it’s best to follow the “climb high, sleep low” principle. A great option is to hike up to the Everest View Hotel for breathtaking panoramic mountain views, or explore the nearby twin Sherpa villages of Khumjung and Khunde. You can also visit the Sherpa museum or simply spend time soaking in the atmosphere of Namche Bazaar. Namche offers a wide range of hotels, lodges, restaurants, bars, cyber cafés, boutiques, souvenir shops, and grocery stores — making it a great place to relax and explore.
On the 6th day of our Everest Base Camp trek by bus/jeepdrive, we hike to Tengboche today. After an initial short, steep climb, the journey is a breathtaking and very charming trail that levels off, offering stunning, uninterrupted views of Ama Dablam, Everest, and Lhotse. You'll cross suspension bridges draped with prayer flags and pass through fragrant pine forests. The final ascent is challenging uphill but rewarded by the spiritual heart of the Khumbu: the Tengboche Monastery. With its serene atmosphere and panoramic Himalayan vistas, this leg is both a physical challenge and a profound cultural experience, making the hard work utterly worthwhile.
The trek from Tengboche to Dingboche is a journey into the heart of the high Himalayas. Leaving the monastery's serenity, the trail descends through fragrant forests before crossing the Imja River. A steady, breathtaking climb then unfolds, revealing the colossal peaks of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Everest. The air grows thin, and the landscape transforms into a stark, beautiful alpine wilderness as you approach Dingboche via Pangboche, a scenic village set in a summer potato-growing valley, preparing you for the higher altitudes to come.
This day is also separated as an Acclimatization day at Dingboche again. Wilderness Excursion would like to make sure that you are properly acclimatized to achieve your goal and dream destination of Everest Base Camp. We have a choice to hike to Nangkartshang - a popular acclimatization hike above Dingboche, offering excellent views of the Himalayas. It involves climbing from the village of Dingboche to the summit of Nangkartshang Peak, which stands at approximately 5,083 meters (16,677 ft). This half-day climb is recommended as a way to prepare your body for higher elevations on the Everest Base Camp trek and should be done slowly with proper acclimatization.
The trek from Dingboche to Lobuche is a challenging trek that delivers a spectacular high-altitude journey. The trail ascends gradually across stark, rocky moraines, offering breathtaking views of giants like Ama Dablam and the Khumbu Glacier. A poignant stop at the memorial stupas of Dugla honors climbers lost on Everest. The final, steep pull to Lobuche (4,910m) is demanding, with the thin air a constant reminder of the immense altitude. This leg is a powerful, humbling prelude to reaching Everest Base Camp.
It is our most important day today. The trek from Lobuche to Gorakshep is a challenging high-altitude journey across stark, rocky moraines with breathtaking views of Himalayan giants like Pumori and Nuptse. Upon reaching the seasonal outpost of Gorakshep, we'll drop our main pack at the lodge and head to the EBC (5364 m) final push. The hike to Everest Base Camp (5364 m) is an emotional crescendo, leading you across the Khumbu Glacier to stand humbled at the foot of the world's highest mountain, a truly unforgettable achievement. Congratulations in advance!
Our guide will wake you up at dawn to start the Kalapatthar (5545 m) hike from Gorakshep. It can be a chilly, breathless climb towards Kalapatthar. The reward is an unforgettable sunrise, painting Mount Everest (8848 m) and its neighboring giants in brilliant gold. After soaking in the Himalayan panorama, the descent begins. The trail then leads downwards towards to Sherpa town of Pheriche, a gradual hike through the stark, beautiful valley. The journey trades high-altitude drama for the welcome relief of lower elevations and the comfort of the lodge in Pheriche.
The trek from Pheriche to Namche is a long, rewarding descent. You retrace your steps through Pangboche and Tengboche, with its famous monastery. The trail then plunges into the deep Dudh Koshi valley, crossing high suspension bridges. The final leg is a steep, challenging climb back up to the vibrant Sherpa hub of Namche Bazaar, a welcome sight after a strenuous day.
The return trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla is a scenic, mostly downhill journey. Retracing your steps through the Dudh Koshi Valley, you pass familiar Sherpa villages like Jorsalle, Monju and Phakding, etc. The well-maintained trail weaves through pine forests and over suspension bridges. While largely easier, the final approach to Lukla involves a short, steep climb, offering a final, breathtaking view of the mountains before celebrating your trek's completion.
After an unforgettable, life-changing journey to Everest Base Camp, our adventure gradually winds down. If all goes according to schedule, we'll catch a morning flight from Lukla back to Manthali, followed by a scenic 130 km drive to Kathmandu.
Upon arrival at your hotel, the remainder of the day is yours to enjoy at your own pace. You can choose to rest and relax, reflecting on your incredible achievement, or perhaps embark on a final shopping excursion for souvenirs. This evening marks the peaceful conclusion of our epic Everest Base Camp trek.

The drive to Everest Base Camp (EBC) Trek start point, the place where hiking begins is at Thamdanda or Surkhe is quite long. Kathmandu to Salleri is 285 km, which takes 9 to 10 hours by public jeep. From Salleri to Tham Danda and Surke is respectively 60 to 70 KM, so it is a long drive by road.
The recently opened road to Tham Danda from Salleri now provides an alternative to the flight to Lukla. However, it is important to note that this is not a widely developed highway; the route is unpaved and remains inaccessible during the rainy season. Even in dry months, only 4WD jeeps can navigate the rugged track.
It is crucial to understand that road travel in Nepal, particularly to remote regions like this, cannot be guaranteed as 100% safe or reliable. This road journey does not reach Everest Base Camp directly. The road terminates at points like Salleri or Bhandar, from which a 9 to 10-day trek is still required to complete the journey to EBC. Therefore, while it offers an alternative starting point, Wilderness Excursion cannot assure the safety or accessibility of this transportation method.
The answer is definitely Jeep travel is cheap, but if you are just a party of two or a solo traveler, opting Modern Everest Base Camp Trek is better in terms of saving budget. But if you are a party of more than 4 or 5 people, you can choose hiring a jeep that can cater to 6 to 7 people, and sharing the cost among group members makes the trip cheaper.
However, the flight, while expensive, is a core part of the modern EBC experience for a reason: it saves invaluable time and effort. Carefully weigh your budget, available time, and appetite for a longer adventure before deciding. You can talk to the expert at Wilderness Excursion
It is possible to drive to Tham Danda in one day, but it can take too long it taking 14 to 16 hours, and is accessible only in dry months (Oct to May). We usually split the day to make the journey more comfortable and enjoyable. You can opt to rent a private jeep if you are short on time.
The road is only accessible during the dry season or months (Oct – May). In wet months or monsoon season (June to August), the road is accessible to Salleri. And it is two two-day walk to Luka to catch the modern EBC trek route.
